Every early morning, dozens of Zanzibar zebus are enjoying the quiet beach. The Zanzibar Zebu is thought to have originated from repeated introductions of Indian cattle and cattle from Burawa area on the Somali coast into Zanzibar and Pemba. Some zebu cattle were also introduced recently from the mainland Tanzania. Most of these are concentrated in Pemba because of the presence of tsetse fly in Zanzibar (Rege and Tawah, 1999).
